One day, when humanity looks back on our present time, we will see it as a transitional period similar to the end of the 19th century. At that time, the first water pipes were laid in the towns of Europe and houses and living areas were gradually connected to the water network. New electric arc lamps lit the 1878 Exposition Universelle in Paris. Seven years later, the first public power plant began operating in Berlin. Electricity and electrical devices began to dominate our households and transform our lives.

And today? Today, we are once again on the verge of very similar changes. Most buildings are still just as unintelligent as they were 50 or 70 years ago. Digitalisation, which has already revolutionised our communications, our mobility and our work, will now also reach our homes and buildings. Within a few years, the Internet of Things could see an estimated 50 billion devices intelligently connected, including electrical appliances, heating systems, alarm systems, access and entry systems and all the other systems that we use at home on a daily basis. The Smart Home of the Future, which promises a noticeable increase in comfort and safety, is right on the horizon. At the same time, we will make our energy consumption more efficient and see electric mobility rise to the fore as an alternative mode of transport.

This is possible because we are constantly integrating our ideas, skills and solutions with those of our customers and partners. The result is that we don’t just build bridges between two points; we also build sustainable, global and open networks. We use these networks to work on solutions and services that are likely to change our lives in a similar way to how the arrival of electricity did 130 years ago. After all, when you combine the skills and talents of many people like this, the possibilities don’t just add up, they increase exponentially. Working together, things become possible that could never have been achieved alone.

This is why we have dedicated this annual report to the great art of building bridges. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our partners, customers and colleagues for the ideas, skills and talent they have shared with us. We look forward to building bridges to the future, together.
